Why do advertising sections attract spam?

Even on webmaster forums where you have an advertising section designed for talk on advertising methods, you will get random spam. Why can't the members read the forum description to know that spam is not welcome there?

The only thing you can do as a forum admin/mod is to delete the spam. There is no arguing with these spammers. Just delete and ban and then move on.

Publishing a clear set of rules on the advertising subforum is a good idea. In your sticky thread be sure to specify, 'this subforum is not for spam advertising'. And, make it clear what will be done if someone spams that subforum, such as ban or suspension from the forum.

Spammers are opportunists and a sticky thread of rules won't stop them from putting up spam links. You just need to be vigilant for spam and strike it down as it happens. After awhile, these spammers get the idea and leave your site alone.

Delete the new posts that are from people who only signed up to post spam ads. The ad section is for those who are active enough to have earned the right to post an advertisement and when those people come back after posting the ad, you will know they are a regular member and not just a spammer.

I haven't seen much success with an advertising section as most times people will just show up to post a link and then leave until the next month.

I guess they attract so much spam because many times they are so easy to post on!

If a member comes back on a regular basis, then I would not mind them having a backlink. Assuming they are linking to a legal site. However, if they are just advertising in the free ad section to get an ad and never bothering to come back, I don't see any reason to leave their advertisement up.
