Do you know all your forum members by first name?

I like to know everyone on my forum by their first name, even if I don't refer to them as that openly. This helps me to feel closer to my community and bonds me with them. And, it takes me past their avatar, to the real person that is posting and helps me think of what is best for those people, rather than what's best for myself or the forum.

I think that when you do know them by first name, it says that you care about them.

Some people will feel self conscious about being called by their real name on a public forum, especially if they are trying to post about personal problems or issues. So if you do know their real name, get permission first before referring to them as that on the forum.

On a very large forum, it might be difficult to know everyone's real name. Though you might have a few close friends who you talk to everyday on your forum and those people could be on a first name basis.
