How do you make your forum feel like a community?

It's easy to put up a forum and get people to post. But how do you get the forum to feel like a community so that everyone pulls together and helps each other or feels emotionall invested in the welfare of the site?

Give each forum member time needed to become a part of the community. Don't rush people into feeling at home. Slowly nurture the members and over time they will feel as if they belong.

Keep posting discussions on your forum daily until other members join in and post too. Don't abandon your forum, make it feel like a home for those who come by daily.

This is one trick that I learned years ago from a local forum. In the introduction of a newbie, they require a short bio data regarding career and education or even family. There is this member called “spotter” who is disguised as a mere member. When replying to a post of a member, the spotter would mention something that refers to the member like addressing him as Attorney if his introduction says he is a lawyer. With that simple gesture, rapport is established and later on that member will be called Attorney not only by the spotter but by other members as well.
