Does your forum software allow for image hotlinking from other websites? Or, do you require your forum members to upload photos?

You can let members hotlink to images on other sites, but always encourage them to upload to a third party site such as TinyPic to avoid legal troubles.

I like the idea of hotlinking. It is much faster to me and I think just as beneficial.

Sometime back, I had a shopping website and someone hotlinked to one of my images and cost me a lot of bandwidth. After that I started using methods to minimize the risk of hotlinking.

For sure, it's a different story when the site owner has asked everyone to share their meme or infographic. In that situation, it's probably OK to hotlink (such as on Facebook when you share to your timeline)
