How do you get the sitelinks (sublinks) in Google search results?

I notice that a lot of sites have sitelinks in Google search. Those are the sublinks under the main link in the Google search results. Most of the results I see with sitelinks are forums and all relate to a similar topic/search. Is there any special formatting of my website needed to get those sitelinks to appear on Google?

Google randomly chooses to give site links under search listings, based on whether or not they think that site is the authority or if those links would be helpful to someone searching for that site. Most times, the site links assigned are random and not in your control.

To increase your chances of having site links shown, you will want to brand your site strongly by ranking number one for whatever your brand/site name happens to be.

Here's what Matt Cutts said about it:

And, here's a really useful tutorial from Google to show you how to do that.
On the Search Console Home page, click the site you want.
Under Search Appearance, click Sitelinks.
In the For this search result box, complete the URL for which you don't want a specific sitelink URL to appear.
In the Demote this sitelink URL box, complete the URL of the sitelink you want to demote.

I am not aware of sitelinks until that it is mentioned here. That means we have no hand in the occurrence of the sitelink in the search list? Maybe the forums have a varied array of topics that Google wanted to explore in relation to the keyword that is being search so it included the sitelinks found in forums.
