Why is Google banned in China?

What reason would China have to ban Google for? Their baidu search engine is terrible IMHO. I blocked it via robots.txt but it kept crawling and it sent about 1,000 bots at once. Did Google do something to the chinese government?

Communism brainwashes people. They have more control over Baidu and they can block things that don't suit them. It's like that in many countries, from Saudi Arabia to China.

I think you are right with the issue of communism because that type of government is paranoid with freedom and social media and the search engines are sources of free information. With their Baidu is it easy to control because it is inside their country and all the need is to shutdown an erring site. They cannot do that with Google and Facebook which are the 2 giants in the internet.

The search engine is one of the most popular sites in the world and its Chinese language version was widely used in the country. Beijing routinely blocks access to sites run by the banned spiritual movement Falun Gong, human rights groups and some foreign news organisations like the BBC. The authorities were already in the habit of using surveillance, censorship or the outright elimination of overly critical websites," said RSF Secretary-General Robert Menard in a letter to the Chinese authorities.

We had a sad experience last year when we went to Beijing for a short vacation. I was so busy before we left that I was not able to prepare for the Chinese culture. All along, I thought that I will just depend on Google Translate so I can understand a little Chinese. Unfortunately, I learned that Google and Facebook were banned in China. That left us defenseless that we just used hand signals in most of our communications. Only the hotel’s receptionist can speak good English while the rest of the Chinese there couldn’t.
