URL redirection is the best way to minimize traffic loss when you change the domain name. For example, your domain was example.com and you changed to myexample.com. Go to your hosting account dashboard, look for your older domain and specify the url for redirection.

I would inform my social media friends about my intentions of changing my site's domain before I do the actual change. This will make them aware of the change and they will be looking forward to reading my site with the new domain.

I will also redirect the old domain link to the new one so that if anyone clicks the old link, they will be automatically be redirected to the new domain.

I think there is a way to place an automatic redirection to your new site. That happened to our company’s website when we were starting because we were using the beta on another site address. When we have finalized the website’s design we uploaded the contents to the new URL and placed a redirection notice so that browsers of the beta site will be brought to the new URL.
