How to start learning SEO?

I'm interested in learning SEO, since it seems like a very important tool nowadays.  I only know the fundamental principle, but I'd like to start by having a clearer picture of what resources it uses and what fields it covers.

I guess I'll try some Youtube videos and courses, but can you think of any other online resources that would help me learn more effectively?

It's really helpful to learn SEO if you have your own blog because you can immediately apply what you have been reading about SEO. You can tweak your own blog to test if what you have learned is really working.

Good tip. And yes only practice makes a man perfect. To learn SEO one must start his/her own website or a blog and then do experiments to learn.

Thanks for your recommendations. I've also heard that autosurfing might help to position your sites in a better place, though I'm not sure if that's a practice generally accepted.

There are many free tutorials on the web. A detailed and helpful one that I've read is here: https://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo/how-search-engines-operate

If you're really serious, try learning a little bit about how search engines work and some basic html. Good luck!

Much better approach in case of learning anything is having a project. Everything you want to learn should have a direction. So that you can learn anything. Same with SEO. You have to pick up a site. Have keywords for the same. And then get the site ranking for those keywords. I have found out that this approach works better. And you learn a lot of things along the way. It may not be easy but it works if you know how to do it.

Yes. Having the project that can be worked on is always a good option. Thats how we have learned new things in shcool and college. And that's how often the real world work is carried out too. So hopefully I am guessing learning SEO this way works out.

The comment at the top is right, if you want to learn you'll have to do so from experience and start your own blog. But before doing so it would be best to do research on it. Gather a lot of information and tips. The sites that the others have posted are good to start reading SEO about. Good luck!

You just have to keep researching and apply what you learn or it'll be lost. Start a blog, not to make money or to get a huge audience (at least not immediately) but to practise until you get a hang of it and become a pro. Search for information on Google, youtube, ask people here on the forum and apply, apply, apply everything you learn.

This is a great advice. That's what I'm doing too. I'm learning from my previous freelancing jobs and applying what I learned in my current ones.

I agree that YouTube is the best place for you to start. I think you should put aside some time and invest some hours on Youtube. This will get you started in your SEO Journey. When you have watched enough videos you can then start looking for a proper SEO course that will teach you all the tips and tricks. If you start from the get go with a course you may get scammed by people who get their material online so you may be learning stuff that is already out there free.

In my opinion the first step in learning SEO is by creating your own site while researching about how to create a SEO friendly site. This would give you a hands on experience on SEO.

Neil Patel and Moz provide some very useful resources on SEO. As search engine optimization is something that is constantly changing and evolving, it's important that you stay on top of the latest changes as well. This is why I would recommend also reading some news resources like Search Engine Journal.

The basic principle is to get as much knowledge as possible about the subject, so basically you gotta gather and accumulate knowledge until the point you're ready to execute that information. You've basically named it, video courses are a great way to learn. I'd recommend finding a person who's an expert in this area to help you out with more details.

If you already have a site then you can start learning SEO by applying SEO optimization techniques to it. Start by researching how to optimize your site. There's a lot of YouTube videos which can help you, just search it.

Hi,
My way out is to start your own project. I used screenshot apps to upload important videos into my blog and make full featured instructions. Only if you study the subject from all aspects you will be capable to explain it to your audience there are chances for you to learn SEO. Right now I use Movavi software for that purpose. This free screen recorder helps to take a high-quality screenshot or video of your desktop and send it than spend your time on empty talks. Hope it helps

I am learning SEO from this site by roaming around for discussions about SEO and I think I am getting a lot of lessons. There are other places that have SEO lessons like e-books and Youtube videos. If you have the luxury of time then you can check on each and every venue to get information about SEO methods that later on you can compile your notes to have your own personal notebook on SEO.

Have you applied it? To be able to understand it more you need to apply it first, then you can increase your knowledge more. YouTube, Google, blog and forum site are the best way you can learn SEO. There are also paid classes, but I wouldn't recommend it since you can learn it for free. Maybe those paid classes have extra tips or something, then go ahead.
