What distracts me when I am writing are the noises from other phones beside me, that's why I want to post an article during the night so that everyone is sleeping and I have my peace of mind to post freely.

The same is true with me. I could not focus well if there is noise around me. Also if my ventilation is lacking I couldn't write very well. I also need water for oxygen for my brain to function well.

I think that's true for all of us. No one can write something good if they're dehydrated. How could you even think without proper ventilation? You'll feel the need to breath air constantly.

That's right for all of us. You are not free to write if you're not in good condition. If you are sick, you could not also write well.

I agree. That's why it's always recommended that we get proper rest and hydration in order to work efficiently. Our mind needs to be healthy along with the whole body.

When we take good care of ourselves, it shows. It's much easier to come up with something good to write when you feel good inside and out.

I think temperature has a lot to do with concentration. If it's too hot, there is no way I'll be able to concentrate on what I'm writing. If it's too cold, the same will happen. Overall, you have to keep the workspace with the ideal temperature so it won't distract you after a short time.

Steve5

Steve5

I like your answer. It's the same for me too. Although, I'm more used to cold temperature. So if it's air conditioned, you'll hear nothing from me.

But if it's hot and uncomfortable, I may not be so quiet. I'm just kidding. But who of us can bear scorching temperatures, right? Especially, for closed off rooms.

I work with the AC on as well. I've found it improves air circulation and helps eliminate dust and mites. It is very good for people who suffer allergies, like me, thanks to the use of new technologies in these devices. The use of air conditioning also prevents the dehydration that the body suffers when it tries too hard to adapt to the environment where it is.

Well, count me in! Sounds like you just gave a slightly infomercial vibe there. This is why I like air conditioners. It's like they changed the game for humanity. I find it so comfortable.

The only downside is that you still need to use moisturizers. Such as lotions and creams. The cold temperature can dry out your skin in a different way.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mcnasci24

mcnasci24

Hahaha, re-reading what I wrote made me realize you're right on the money about the infomercial vibe. But what can I say? I can't live without it.

Ah yes, I have to keep eye drops nearby because my eyes get dry with the AC. I put on two drops in the morning and two in the afternoon, and that does the trick.

I'm probably one of those persons who easily get swayed by air conditioner talk. In fact, I saved a commercial because it was so cool. No pun intended.

I like using scented lotions during cold weather. I find that it smells fresh and lasts longer. My favorite is Sweet Pea.

Though, they end up smelling funky if used in very hot weather.

You're welcome. It's been shown that dehydration can cause us to lose focus. Sometimes we need to drink water but aren't aware of it due to stress and focusing too much on work.

One good habit to practice is to drink one glass of water every 30 minutes to 1 hour. That way, you can avoid discomfort due to lack of hydration.

That's very relate-able. It seems that many of us are distracted by friends and family members. They're in constant need of our attention. So if we don't go somewhere they can't reach us, we won't have enough mental resources to focus on what we're doing.

We share the same sentiments. It's best to work your mind and think in the evening when everyone is sleeping. As we can't find a solemn place easily, we just have to be the ones to adjust and wait for the most solemn time of the day.

I don’t clearly get your point about those ringing phones. Are they your phones or the phones of the people in your home? Or maybe you are working in a cyber shop? Whatever it is my advice is for you to wear a headset so it will block all the external sounds and you can have peace and quite in what you are doing. The ringtone of the phone is definitely a disturbance that will break your concentration.

I actually prefer writing in a well-lit room. So that's something we have in contrast. But I can relate with bothersome movement. One thing I find super distracting is when someone hovers close to me for more than a minute.

Lots of noise completely throws off my attention span. Also, if I’m stressed or anxious about other things in life, I also find it hard to focus. It’s like if I have other things to do on my to-do list, I need to have those organized before I can offer work my 100% focus.

Stress is also something that deeply bothers me. I've realized that consciously thinking about a lot of stuff can be the root cause of this. This is why I stop thinking about things simultaneously.

The better question is, what doesn’t distract me from writing? I have a really short attention span and a bad habit of randomly browsing the internet. Whenever I feel like there is a pause in my writing process, my mind instantly goes to checking some form of social media. This would be fine and all if it weren’t for the fact that I get distracted for extended periods.

Another issue is that I live on the second floor of my grandparents’ rural home, and my grandfather has a blacksmith’s workshop. Nothing is lovelier than trying to do research and write an article while there is someone clanging away at an anvil at like 140 decibels.

God bless him for being so active into his old age, but god also grant me noise canceling headphones while you’re at it.

I had to laugh the other day - here’s a good example of how distracted I get (and how many things I try to do at once).

I found out that a smartphone allows a maximum of 500 browser tabs to be open at any one time. I only knew this because Safari on my phone wouldn’t let me open any more tabs, and when I force closed them I had 500 different internet pages open on my phone.

I feel like I’m the queen of distraction!

I totally get his, and I’m actually going through it at this very moment. I’m working on a project right now, and it should’ve been done by the end of what I consider my work day (since I work from home, on my own time). It was supposed to be a three or four-hour side project at most, but I’m already six hours into it!

What’s worse, I’m sitting here chatting on the forums instead of working on it! The insanity of it all. I need to find some sort of browser extensions that limit me specifically to my work sites, haha. But I'd probably find another distraction then as well.

In times like this, I can hardly write. Anything that has the potential to take my heart off my writing is a sure distraction, no matter how subtle, no matter how important. I still try and get stuff done, but sometimes I realize that my mood is going to negatively impact my writing and it's better to wait until I'm in a better headspace.

What distracts me when I started writing in our house is my kids because they are very noisy and playing in my room which makes me uncomfortable and cannot focus well on what I am writing. Even I would say that they should be playing in my room still they keep coming back that is why sometimes I am writing my article during late at night or early in the morning when they are still sleeping so that there will be no more hindrance in my writing. I cannot scold them since they are just small kids that didn't know yet what they are doing. All they know for now is to have some fun by way of playing every now and then.

I have young children too and when they’re up and playing it can certainly be tough trying to focus. I find that I get my best work done when I can complete things either before they’re awake or after they’ve gone to bed.

I try not to let the news reports distract me but sometimes when they come on TV (and I'm in the same room with my husband), the reports make me stop what I'm doing so I can listen carefully. Other than that I have learned how to block out almost any distraction. In fact, my husband just asked me the other day what was it that was doing so much on the computer that I completely ignore him when he's talking to me. LOL. What distracts you easily when writing?

Whenever I hear that the news is tarting already I sometimes pause on my writing just to give time to the news which really affects my focus and concentration. I am trying my best now to come up a better idea and strategy so that I will not be disturb in my writings

I have a definite strategy for watching the news so that it does not interfere with my online work. I find one particular news program that is dependable and reliable and each day I look for their daily report and watch it at a set time of the day. My husband likes business reports so we often listen to Bloomberg for business and technology stories. But he only tunes in at certain times of the day. Then we find a reporting service that covers news all around the world, not just America, and listen to their reports. Sometimes we can find a live news stream. Sometimes we find videos that are a few hours old. It's all good. Then in the afternoon when I'm in the car going to pick up my daughter and granddaughter from school, the BBC News is usually on the radio, BBC Is a really good news reporting service.

Through keeping off distractions. close your browser. Turn off your cellphone. Block out time and inform your family they're not to disturb you except the residence is on fire or they see arterial blood. Lock yourself in a room. put on earplugs. In my experience, the writers who revel in the most distractions are those who sense guilty about taking the time to write and consequently do not set and preserve barriers.

I think for me I just think a lot about the writing errors like say typo and others. I some of the time think about making the least mistakes. And to get over that you have to consider about other distractions. I mostly think about writing habits that improve my speed. Considering I write a lot of fiction. I may have to find ways to write something better that can get me more conversion and also get things done.

What distracts me from writing is different kinds of noise. When I write, I prefer to be in a quiet place. Having a quiet place to write has a big factor when writing. You won't lose your concentration and it can boost your brain to write a better content.

Well, ideally I like to sit in a very silent environment when I am writing something but I don't think that it is possible to get complete silence especially when you are living in a big city with very busy and noisy streets. We eventually get used to all the noises around us and learn to work in spite of all the distractions. However, the biggest problem that I encounter sometimes while writing is when people speak very loudly to each other or talk loudly on their mobile phones. It breaks my line of thoughts and I usually do lose my focus when this happens. I prefer to take a small break at such a time and then resume my work later.

I get easily distracted by all sorts of things - background noises, the sound of people talking, or music. Whenever I think of a good content and have organized it in my head, I try to type it immediately because I easily lose my train of thought. Hence, as much as possible, I write in a quiet place such as a library or in my room.

Well, every unnecessary noise that I hear on the background distracts me. So, I always wait for the time when everyone's quiet and peaceful, that's on midnight up to like 2-3 am. I like working during that time period. Strangely, my mind is used to working during those times.

Hunger, headaches, and noise. All of them are definite buzzkills, and each has the capability to stop me from writing. Usually, I have snacks nearby so I can grab a quick bite, and if I get a headache I rest my eyes for about 10 minutes and drink a cup of warm tea. Noise, however, is the worst of them all, as I can't control who or what is making the sound.

Me too. The worst has to be noise. I'm sometimes tempted to call out the person making the loud sounds. It's so annoying. The hardest part is if it's a human doing that. Like kids running around and crying. Makes you want to have a mute button. Kind of like the movie Push.

Oh gosh, kids are the worst when it comes to noise! I have a couple of neighbors who have small children, and one day I just could not take it anymore. I just went straight ahead and did a loud "Shhhhh!". I regret to inform it didn't work in the slightest and those kids still cry a lot. A mute button would be like my birthday and Christmas came at the same time.

That's right. I'm so glad someone can relate. Kids are so not cute when they do that. Especially, the shrill cry of infants. Well, you get an A for effort. I've tried similar things but they didn't work.

Sometimes you just have to vacate the vicinity until things calm down. Do it for your sanity's sake. Also, try watching Adam Sandler's movie Click. I got it wrong the previous time. That's the correct title.

It's very entertaining. My favorite part is the powerful use of the remote to go through life.

Oh, gee. Thanks! I'm glad it made your day. You know what? That movie almost made me cry. Adam Sandler is such a good actor. He can make you laugh and cry at the same time.

The part where his life fast forwarded uncontrollably was difficult to watch. Imagine if that happened to us.

I'm thankful it had a happy ending. We all needed that.

And yes. Treat yourself with some ice cream while you're at it. I like chilling in the convenience store whenever it's inconvenient where I'm at.

Now imagine if you could rewind yourself eating ice cream. I bet you'd always be satisfied with one cone if you could do it all over again as much as you want.

I think it’s always difficult when any noise is invading your space that you can’t simply switch off. It’s one thing if it’s a TV or radio making noise that you can easily eliminate, but another thing entirely when the noise is created externally and not as easy to get rid of.

There are many things that really distract me when I am writing. My husband loves to talk my ear off and sometimes does not realize that if I stop, I will lose my train of thought. And my cats distract me as well. They are just too cute and want attention. It seems to me that whenever I get really involved in something is when they want the most attention.

Social media is also a huge distraction for me. I may say I am going to take a 2-minute break and it winds up being 15 or 20 minutes. Email is also distracting because I often feel the need to respond back to emails as soon as I have read them.
