All those points highlighted are valid, but I would like to add that a freelancer is his or her motivation. You have to stay motivated always.

Trustworthy is one. Freelancers are not bound with longer contracts so you might wary of their work so choose some you can trust. Hard working should be another trait. Employers always look for employees who are industrious. Your hard work might open new doors for you. Quick decision maker and problem solver should also be a factor.

The first thing that came into my mind is dedication. It will help you to reach your goals and be determined to finish such tasks. Also patience in your job is required for you to be successful. It will require you time to work for your success as it will not come overnight. You also have to believe in yourself and learn to never surrender. Just keep yourself focused to your goal so you'll not go away from it.

Patience and dedication are 2 traits that are needed for freelancing. I have some friends who tried freelancing for a short while and they did not last long because their endurance was tested by the slow earnings. Success in freelancing is not easy to reach and I believe that even if I have been freelancing for 3 years with a meager income that I can still reach success with a good amount of earnings if I would be patient.

I also have met a certain people and I'm the one who introduced them to freelancing. Sad to say, they only last for a week and easily surrendered because they learned how slow the progress and how low the income could be. Truly, freelancing is only for the people who have long patience and dedication.

One of the main quality that a freelancer must posess is self discipline. Being a freelancer tends to give so much freedom that if you do not impose discipline upon yourself you will end up having no direction or target in your chosen career. With nobody monitoring your progress other than yourself it is easy to fall astray from the path that you wish to be. We must have a set of clear goals and focus on the accomplishment of these goals and discipline is much needed if we wanted fo achieve this things.

For me, Professionalism is the most important quality to be successful in a freelancing world. It is necessary to have a professional behavior to have a long-term work relationship with your clients. If you have it, everything else follows. You will work hard, you will be honest, and do everything to exceed your client's expectations.

Perseverance. You've got to have the ability to get knocked down and get up again. Being able to self motivate is huge and if you don't have the ability to persevere it's going to be a struggle in the freelancer world.

Freelancing is like any other business in this world. For any business or job you need certain qualities to be able to cope with them. I agree that you need perseverance and patience as one of the qualities. Freelancing like any other job needs skills and time. You need to slowly build up your skills and accept that they lead to an increase in your income. Most people loose hope and give up and start calling freelancing a skill. All you have to do is give it some time.

I think being Motivated, Focused and Determined are the most important qualities a freelancer must have in order to succeed. A freelancer must always be motivated in writing, not being so will make him lose focus and that would affect his writing quality. Also a writer needs to have the determination to learn to succeed in writing.

I totally agree with you. Those qualities that you have mentioned above are exactly that the most important qualities a freelancer must have in order to succeed, pardon me if I just repeated it. It's true because even if a freelancer has the best skills and he's hard working, however, if he's not really motivated, focused, or determined then it's useless. I also believe it all leads to success from your motivation and determination. In fact, based on my experience, whenever I feel not motivated from everything I cannot do anything productive.

Persistence is another quality freelancers should have in their quiver.

For many freelancers you have to be continuously trying to find more work. Along the way there'll be many rejections. It's these rejections which can make someone give up but persistence does yield results.

If you don't give up, keep pitching and querying prospective clients, the chances of getting hired go up. And that is how you will succeed as a freelancer.

Time management is another one I’ve had to really work on as a freelancer. It’s not as simple as a job where you’re strictly there as a 9 to 5. For many of us freelancers we work from home where there are other pressures and demands on our time. Having to learn how to structure my day to optimize my time has been a learning curve!

Success is not only for freelancers but all people.

You must know what you want.

You then go for it.

Look for ways to make it successful.

Manage your time well.

Seek all successful tools.

Never let downers pull you down.

You will be successful as a freelancer too

The noted points are incredibly right! One must possess these kinds of character when planning to do freelancing. However, everybody can be successful, but not being a business-minded. I think this covers making sure that clients will pay and we won't be leaving hanging.

One of the best qualities a freelancer must have is his/her willingness to learn. There will be a lot of times wherein you'll get stuck with a problem regarding your work. You'll have no one to turn to and will be forced to self-learn everything.

Learning things in your own way is a good noted point. When doing freelancing, you do not have anyone to lean on aside from yourself. Assessment, training and nurturing your own self will probably result into success.

Sure it is. I learned it the hard way when I had my first employer. I was stuck with a task and do not know what to do. Then it hit me that this is how things are when you remotely work from home, you solely rely on yourself and your abilities to research and complete the job.

Freelancing is quite a challenging but also a rewarding profession at the same time. everything you do is your own, that does give a lot of self-confidence to a freelancer. I agree with all the points that everyone has made in their replies here. I think persistence, patience, a lot of self-belief and the quality to never give up are very essential and desirable for any freelancer who wants to be successful in his profession.

They must have perseverance. Too many freelancers start out confident only to later give up when things get tough. I've read that many successful freelancers pushed through despite financial problems. Many factors will go against you at some point. So you have to be strong enough to handle adversities in order to come out victorious.

I would not have to disagree with you because having perseverance is a good noted point. Some freelancers do not finish a project because they think they can't make it anymore, especially when reaching the hardest part. Needless to say, part of being successful is struggle and mainly, one need to overcome in the long run.

This is why freelancing isn't for everyone. It's best for those who can commit to their chosen source of income. Many have said that freelance sites are only stepping stones. The next step is to build your own website where you can offer your services.

I think good skill and understanding customers and keeping up with the demands. That is all you need for success. Other things are just additional to the work. You can't really work around the success. Because you have to understand that success is not one way street. And you have to work with the way things build from there. Always make sure that the customer is going to pay you.

I would have to agree with you, especially with having good skills and understanding customers and making sure that customers will pay you. One of the main problems of freelancing is 'pay'. Some freelancers are not being paid by clients and that you need to be sure of it.

Yes the thing is that customers often don't have idea of what they want. And they keep on changing. You can see that you have to serve them some really good results. In case of achieving success that does not seem to be any easy. It takes time and people have to be learning from their efforts for that case to be any good.

This is indeed a tough question to answer, but absolutely good points will be noted. In my years of freelancing, there are three things I can say the top most important things to consider in the field of freelancing. First is trust. Second is dedication. And lastly, hard work.

I think the important qualities that a certain freelancer should poses in order to achieve success is first, having a passion for it. A certain freelancer could not be successful if he/she doesn't have the passion for his/her work which is really vital to success. A freelancer should have the determination to work hard and to have some patience since success is cannot be achieve over night. It will take some time before we can see the changes and lastly being smart and knowledgeable in anything could help a freelancer to reach success in life. We need to be creative at some point so that everything would turn into a reality.

Based from the successful freelancers I know, I believe that the key to success is the ability to work without procrastinating and/or the dedication to search for more opportunities and try amidst the consequences and possibilities of failure. Most freelancers are very dedicated and they don't stay at home just to sit down, they use their internet connection and time to rest to look for different jobs and I've observed that most successful freelancers are knowledgeable with ICT/Computers/Editing/Etc. and so I am very interested to take a course related to it in the future because I've observed that there are more online opportunities for computer literate persons/computer experts.

Freelancing is never an easy job. Though freelance jobs come so easily and many people enter this world everyday, keeping the job and being there for a very long time takes a lot of effort and patience. Well, for you to achieve success, you must have the passion to do what you're into.

I think the other trait that a freelancer must have is the honesty. As a freelancer, you need to be honest with what you can do and you cannot. You need to be transparent to your client and assure him that you are willing to learn. I heard a lot of cases wherein freelancers disappeared without telling their clients. And one reason is the fear to tell their clients about the things that they failed to do. This is leaving a bad impression on your clients and questions why you left.

I think the main problem with freelancing is the motivation. You can't exactly have the motivation everyday to work on your own in your house. With people working offline jobs, they have to go to work regardless if they want to or not. With freelancing, you don't have a workplace to "force" you to work. I'd imagine motivation to be a very big problem with freelancers because of this.

I would like to think good qualities are completion persistence and quality. You need both of those qualities to start a successful freelancing career.

If you do not have good quality, then buyers will most likely refund their order with you. If you do not have completion persistence with your orders then this can cause a conflict especially if you have clients that keep ordering from you but you are taking a long time to deliver orders. No buyer wants to wait forever to get an order finished, and especially if it is a common thing.

These two qualities are what buyers want most honestly. They want their orders to be done quick with the utmost of quality as possible. As a buyer you would want the same, if you were on the opposite end of the transaction.

Oh, most definitely patience. A lot of it. Freelancing is a ton of hardship in the beginning before it gets better. It’s a lot of lonely nights, working 24/7, sweat, even blood haha. And also nerves, and it’s pretty much the same with entrepreneurship, just on a different scale (unalike pay and salaries not similar). But you own yourself, you own your time, and you own your own product. It’s great in the long run. You can take a break whenever you decide, if you need the break. Go on a holiday. Sure. No problem. You don’t have to wait a whole year to get a paid leave, or unpaid leave.

Patience.

I think it is the dedication to the work that is the most important although honesty should always be there especially in the negotiation table. When the freelancer is lazy and the work is neglected then that is an indication that he cannot be trusted even if his resume speaks highly of him. Dedication is very important in any kind of job. In our office, the dedication of the employee is our top priority in the list when it comes to promotions.

That is very true, dedication and honesty towards your work are very essential in all kinds of work including Freelancing. When you are dedicated to your work then you will do all the efforts that are required to fulfill your commitments and achieve your targets. If there is no dedication then eventually a person will lose his focus in work and fail miserably in all his endeavors.

The most important quality for a freelancer in my opinion is dedication. You need to give 100% dedication to your work and to completing tasks. I do agree that being a freelancer is harder as you need to be your own problem solver if any problems were to arise we don't have the luxury of getting assistance from anyone else because it's a one man show.

I think for me the most important qualities that a freelancer must have to achieve success is to have first a passion in freelancing jobs because it is very hard to work if you don't have some interest and you are doing it only just for the sake of money since I think it will not work out for a longer period of time. Second is that we must have the patience to wait for a longer period of time because freelancing works takes a lot of time for us to see the results or to make a decent income from it. Lastly, we need to be hard working since freelancing job is a continuous process that we need to keep working and improving because we earn based on our initiatives, no work no pay which is something that will push us to the limit.
