We all want traffic and sales, and we know blogging can bring those to our websites, but a lot of the beginner bloggers tend to make some crucial mistakes that could hurt their authority later on.  Rookie bloggers make rookie mistakes, and usually they are easily avoidable, but they can be fixed fairly easy so don't worry too much if you've already messed up lol. 

When it comes to blogging, people think you can just throw content on your pages and call it a day, but that's just the beginning of what a bloggers journey consists of.  You have to look like a professional to be treated like one, you have to publish quality content without pitching people all the time, you have to focus on your blog and not how to monetize it with ads, and you have to be focused on a single niche or industry so you don't spread yourself too thin.  Luckily, that's exactly what I'm going to cover in this discussion 4 rookie mistakes that all bloggers must avoid


If you want to be a professional, look like one!
People view blogs all the time and judge them based on first appearance.  Yes, it's sad that this happens, but it's something that is hard programmed into our brains and it's difficult to overcome.  So instead of having a free theme and some images you made in MS paint, why don't you look for a premium theme and hire a designer or purchase some stock photos for your blog so people see you as the authority within your niche and not just a random person.

This isn't a dating scene, so judging you based on appearance isn't something that is frowned upon, so boost your image and become the prettiest in your niche then watch your newsletter subscribers rise as well as your social shares and engagement 4 rookie mistakes that all bloggers must avoid


Don't use your content to constantly sell something!
So many new bloggers just post content that is always pitching a service, affiliate link, product, etc. and it just ruins your own image.  You'll be seen as the blog that constantly advertises, and if the search engines catch on to your tactics, you can kiss your free traffic good bye lol.  Instead, why now just publish great content with a banner on the side for people to click on if they really want to?  By doing this, you will boost your engagement, keep your readers happy, and likely get some shares and sales because you're not forcing your links down someones throat.

Run your blog like you're a professional, not like you're a beginner that needs to make a sale to buy some food, because no one will care what you do in your personal life.  People just want quality content that they enjoy reading, but if you're loading it with links and banners, you won't see people staying for long.


Your blog is for content, not constant advertising!
We get it, you want to make some money from your blog posts, but you don't need to have 26 pop ups and drop downs to do so.  You also don't have to place advertising banners in the header, body of the text, below the text, after the first post in the comments section, in the footer, and basically anywhere else you can think of.  Doing this will just annoy people because they will likely click something on accident, and that means they will leave your pages, and they might not think of coming back because your pages are littered with ads.

If you want to run a credible blog, don't make the rookie mistake of flooding your pages with ads, we understand you want to make money from your pages but there are better ways of doing this.  If you're running a free service that actually benefits users, it's understandable why there are so many ads, but if you're blogging then you don't need to place all these ads and reduce the authority and feel of your blog all together.


Focus on one niche or industry within you blog!
This is one of the most annoying things, mainly because the beginner blogs are all over the place with their content, and I never know what I'm going to read next.  Sure, if you're posting on a gossip website or news related website your content will be a little more broad, but it will still be in a single niche!

New bloggers think it's a great idea to run 18 different niches under one domain name, maybe they think "I only have to pay for one hosting, one domain, and one logo to target everything I want!" but that's not how a successful blog works!  You need to focus on one niche or industry when you run your blog, and only post related content so people will love what you're reading and they know where they can come back for specific information.  If you're posting 10 articles a day, and each article is for a different niche but they're all on the same website, your readers won't know how to judge you and they will see you as someone who can't make up their mind.  If you're judged as "confusing" then people will quickly leave because they don't want to read about Justin Bieber when they landed on your blog because they saw your title "12 ways to stain wood floors" lol 4 rookie mistakes that all bloggers must avoid

Starting a blog is an easy thing to do, but running one professionally isn't something you can learn overnight.  You'll need to be seen as a professional, and that takes some skill because you need to write great content as well as have a decent design, but you can get those down pat pretty quickly.  You will need to stop advertising wherever you can on your blog, because people are there to read your content and not to click on your ads that might not even be related to your posts lol.  You need to stop pitching in every single one of your posts, people will see right through you, and that means they will leave quicker than they got to your blog 4 rookie mistakes that all bloggers must avoid

Yes, I agree with these because no one wants to be sold all the time. Plus if you provide good or great content your users will come. It reminds me a bit of Field of Dreams, "If you build it, they will come." Get the structure in place and you should get traffic beyond what you expected.

Absolutely true! I myself immediately leave a website that is always pitching a sale and unsubscribe to a newsletter that always contains sales promotion.

I think in general in life people are going to judge each other through the appearance. And that's another thing is that we have to see all the bloggers to see there. I think many of us make mistakes on the connection side. And also some of the time we make mistakes on the growth side. You can see that some bloggers take really large time. And that means they have to work harder on small things.

I fully agree that your blog is all about your niche so don’t use it for continuous advertising of your business interests. In my niche of pets, I was advised to be sparing in including advertisements of our vet and pet products because blog readers want to read an article about your niche and not what about you are selling. Well, I know that some bloggers are doing that excessive selling that may cause their readership to drop.

Exactly--if all you do is constantly promote, promote, promote, then you come off as annoying and desperate, really. I know this type of behavior turns me off when I visit a site. I want to feel like I am walking into a warm comfortable cafe and getting settled in with the content--then, I will investigate what I want to purchase or invest my time and money in. If you are too pushy, you WILL push away traffic. I think it is fine to put links to your products or catalog at the end of our blogs, but I want to try to capture the audience of customers with content which leads to the eventual and hopeful sale--and not the other way around.

Yes, Sales pitches that are all about "Buy this marvelous product" and act like you are getting a great deal by showing slashed through price tags, just don't ring true to me and I won't buy them. I just think it is more important to have a quality product and use some advertising from satisfied, legitimate customers.

You are so right, and if you can get reviews and testimonials from repeat customers, which your new customers or curious traffic can observe and appreciate, then that is THE BEST way to grow an online, or brick-and-mortar, or ANY kind of business, for that matter. Giving refunds and even freebies or rebates is also a good way to get customer loyalty and satisfaction. i am always looking for new strategies in all of the areas to execute to increase my traffic and to give better customer service.

Yes, some people are skeptical and others are not. but I think people understand the truth when they hear it, so relying on your satisfied customers is one positive way to do business in my opinion.

I think you are right. I try to just trust my instincts on things like this, and I hope I am intelligent and experienced enough to do so. At times, I have been duped--most likely because I was initially over-enthusiastic about a product or service only to find out it does not deliver on its promises. Most of the time, I have gotten my money back in this situation, but not always. I think that repeat customers are the foundation of most every business, and once I am sure that they are satisfied with what I am doing for them, I do not mind asking for reviews from them.

Yes, I agree. But only because my kids keep telling me "Mom! Sounds like you're trying to sell something!" I'm thinking to myself: 'Well duh! That's why I signed up to be an affiliate marketer.' But I take their criticism as valid. Even some of the online writing sites have started editing our content and removing affiliate products. Instead, they prefer you use text links and sort of seamlessly work it into the content. I'm OK with that. But you know? Sometimes, people like to see pictures!!

sadly, I am making the mistake number one. I am always using free theme, free graphics and free images on my blogs. I do remove the footer link for the theme and wordpress but my theme is free after all.
I want to make money from my blog, however, I am not always selling, I am also providing information. Thankfully, I am using one niche per blog

On the contrary, the free theme is not bad at all because I am seeing many blogs with free themes that I continue reading because of the content. In other words, you may need to improve the quality of your content and you also need to promote your blog in order to get more readers aside from the traffic that your site obtains from the search engines in case you are doing SEO work.

That's true. I am using free theme on my website does not mean I am unprofessional. Well, I understand the power of using premium theme and limitation on using free theme, however, using premium themes can be very expensive especially if you are running a lot of blogs.

I think a little bit of advertising is fine, but some people just try to hard, with ads and their whole website or blog is one big ad. I don't think most people react well to being "sold" all the time. I think a little bit goes a long way in terms of ads on your site.

Always focus on your content, limit your advertisement posts to a minimum or dedicate just a limited portion of the space for ads, while keeping your blog posts still occupy the majority of the page. Focus on improving your content first, money will just come soon after you have quality posts and a solid viewer base.
