Similar Keywords on Different Pages?

I have heard that targeting similar keywords but on different pages can be detrimental to your rankings so I need some guidance here.

I run a baby competition every month on my blog so I post when a new competition is up, then I post the top 20 in the competition, a week later the top 10 and then the last week I post the winner. This is 4 posts a month with the word "baby competition" in it.

Is this going to have a negative effect on my website and if so how can I work around it?

I don't target the keyword "baby competition" on its own at all. I target "baby competition september 2016" then "top 20 baby competition september 2016" etc.

Please advise!

If you talk about baby competitions in general, well yeah, maybe have a page for this. But if the content is very related and basically you are saying the same thing on both pages, don't don it! It will actually hurt your SEO.
Google will see you as incapable of providing everything a user needs in a single piece of content.

Thanks Cristian I get great traffic from my social networks from these pages. I just asked Mike if it would work if I set these pages not to be indexed or crawled?

Not sure where you heard it... Just doesn't sound right to me. It's all related to the niche of your website, so i don't see any downside in it

Well I heard that if there is similar content on different pages then it would count against me. I only just thought of that today when I was busy with writing a new post and my heart sank wondering if I am getting myself into some poop or not!

Ok so your vote is that I am fine... so far so good then!

I didn’t know that having the same keywords in different pages can be an issue. Maybe I have to learn more about the use of the proper keyword. This is the first time that I have come across this issue. I thought all the while that a keyword that you use can be all over the site as long as it is related to the niche. In the example “Baby Competition” as the key phrase, it wouldn’t be good if it will be reused in another page?
