Getting to page 1 in Google and ranking #1 is not an exact science.

So many times I have clients ask me "When will I be ranked #1 on Google, Yahoo!, and Bing?" And my response is always "It depends on how hard we can push your website without getting a penalty and if your competition is doing search engine optimization or not." Normally they don't like this answer because it's fairly vague. But in the SEO world, like most of you know, we can't guarantee a persons website will be ranked #1 on page 1 in a certain amount of time. We can give them a basic timeframe of 3 to 6 months, but they don't usually like that.

Increasing your search engine rankings takes a load of work by a team of people in order to get a website ranked high for difficult keywords. A lot of clients who are getting into SEO for the first time don't understand this and just want instant rankings no matter the penalties. But when they get a penalty for doing their own SEO, they say that it's all bad and that no one should ever pay an SEO company to do the work lol Getting to page 1 in Google and ranking #1 is not an exact science.

Your website needs to be optimized from head to toe and even then you aren't guaranteed a spot in the top 3 positions on the first page.

New websites will almost never see the top 3 spots because their domain age and authority is horrible, but clients don't want to hear that. All they want to hear is "Oh you just put your website up yesterday? Sure we can get you ranked #1 for the term 'Pay Day Loans' and help you make $15,000 a day!" but it doesn't work like that.

SEO now is like a branding game and works over time. People who don't treat SEO seriously will just hate it in the long run because they got a penalty and are pissed off lol Getting to page 1 in Google and ranking #1 is not an exact science.

So in short, just like the title, getting to #1 on page 1 of Google is not an exact science. If you hire an SEO company, work with them, don't judge them on every turn. Just let them do what they do and you'll be happy you did Getting to page 1 in Google and ranking #1 is not an exact science.

I like the way you answer them - "It depends on how hard we can push your website without getting a penalty and if your competition is doing search engine optimization or not." - you are pointing out two main issues;, the fact that what competitors are doing ultimately affects how you are going to do as it is all like a race to make it to the top positions. Secondly, if only there were not penalties and restrictions, everybody would be doing anything and whatever it takes to rank. Considering that there are things that one should refrain from doing, we need to stick to other methods to rank that are safer. These techniques revolve around SEO, and they take time, patience and consistency. So there is no way to say it is going to take a month, two months or six months to manage to rank. It could take more and it could take less. There is no way to forecast or to be precise. So clients need to bear this in mind and try to come to terms with it. They need to embark on a long term journey with their SEO company or specialist and never expect miracles.

People just want the quickest way to the top so they can be millionaires Getting to page 1 in Google and ranking #1 is not an exact science. But they don't know the hard work that is put in behind the campaigns. And I know how to get them a penalty pretty easily, so I know how to avoid them as well Getting to page 1 in Google and ranking #1 is not an exact science.

Some of my clients are ridiculous. I get the oddest emails sometimes from them asking when they will be #1 and I say "Within 3 to 6 month" but they follow up with "No, I want to know the exact day I'll be #1"

The clients I have who pay much more per month than the basic package are the ones that I rarely get questioned by. I'm assuming because they aren't hurting for money, like the lower paying clients, and they know it will take time.... because that's what I told them before we started lol Getting to page 1 in Google and ranking #1 is not an exact science.

Razzy I couldn't agree with you more. There is so much work and effort that goes into ranking and most people don't understand this.

The way I see it the starting point is great keyword research, so finding keywords that you can rank for.

Then the next step is creating quality content that is optimized for those keywords.Once these things have been done then it is time to start working on backlinks and other off page SEO methods.

What I have seen, and yes I was one of them too, is people expecting SEO freelancers to perform miracles with websites that have not got any quality content or even optimized for SEO!

I have also seen so many people expecting fast results. With my own website I spent a year working very hard in it, adding quality content on a regular basis and not getting many great rankings... and then suddenly in one week I got 3 #1 rankings in a week. I quickly came on over here and bought some services to back those rankings up LOL.

It takes time and hard work. It is not an exact science but there are important things that need to be done to get to where you want to be.

Oh I hate that type of clients, that have no idea about online marketing or SEO but one thing is always the same, they all want to be ranked number one on Google!

Seriously, some of them are obsessed and no matter how well I try explaining that it takes time and are a lot of factors involved they still ask me why aren't they ranked number one for a very generic keyword a couple of days after the website has just got live. They are asking me to rank new websites on generic keyword in a couple of days! It's simply incredible, just is why I have a PDF ready that explains it all so I don't have to waste time with each client.

Mind sharing that .PDF???? lol Getting to page 1 in Google and ranking #1 is not an exact science.

I have a set of canned responses for most of the new clients I get. I think I'm up to around 70 answers to beginner questions so that I don't have to answer them technically lol. I wish I could just put them all into one email and be like "I know you're going to ask these questions, so here's the answers before you do". But that would be less personal and I'm sure I would lose some sales lol.

Maybe I should put all those questions and answers into a .pdf so that I can have something fancy like you Getting to page 1 in Google and ranking #1 is not an exact science.

Even though the PDF is written by me I can't share it. Essentially company property since I use it only at work.
I say prepare something fancy, you don't need a lot of content, SEO is actually pretty boring for most people. Just straight to the point answers divided by nice chapters. Infographs and other images may help a lot. Cheers.

Yes, very accurate! Usually at times you have buyers that will purchase from you wanting results instantly, and this is not how it works! They believe since they are buying a SEO package than the website will get ranked automatically for the specified keywords, which is not true. Even some sellers here offer services stating they will get your website to the 1st page within X amount of time, and it really boggles me to see buyers rate the order with a positive rating. Has the seller actually ranked it in the given time or is the buyer unsure how it all works?

That’s also my take on SEO methods that it is not an exact science and we cannot get assurance that with the SEO work we have done, the website will be on page 1 of the search list and much more to be in a good position on page 1. What we can hope for is the ranking that is improving. If the website is on page 2 then work on the SEO methods that you know and check the ranking after a week or 2 so you will get a feel of how your SEO work is doing.
