Is it safe to leave your WIFI without a password?

How do you secure your wifi? Is it safe to leave it open or are you using a password and if so why?

A couple of years ago my Wifi was unsecured due to getting a modem and router and I forgot to enable a password for it. A couple months down the road our internet service was disabled, and I was curious as to why so I called my internet service provider. They informed me that there was many illegal downloads, and that some movie companies sent an infringement notice of some kind due to someone downloading tons of movies via a torrent downloader.

I informed the support agent that we weren't the ones downloading the movies, and they were shocked to find out that our wifi wasn't secured and then immediately placed a password on it and then reactivated the service. They said that the next time they get another notice they would turn off all services, regardless of whether or not we were the ones downloading the movies.

Lesson learned! From now on, I always set up a password, and the password is a bunch of special characters. Our internet service provider only allows like 16 character passwords which is insane, and they should allow more. If they are serious about security there should be no limit on the password length. It may be the router or modem or whatever system that allows only 16 characters, but it should be updated as 16 characters in my eyes is not enough for security!

It can be used for illegal activities, including terrorism... It's very risky. You should use WPA2 encription, not WPA or WEP.

Hi sanfora thanks for your question. I never used Wi-Fi without security or password. I think there has not other notable threat rather than free use your internet by some others. If you make your Wi-Fi password free anybody can connect with your internet. And you know all internet company provide service for limited bandwidth. So, if many user use at a time by same internet connection, your original speed will be share equally. For example: you have 5 MBPS internet and if 5 user connect at a time, all 5 only get speed by 1 MBPS Who want to share subscription bandwidth with neighbors?

It is obviously not safe. From neighbors who abuse of your open connection to possible illegal activities carried out without your knowledge, and possibly getting hold of your personal information, it is a must to set a password for your wi-fi!

I agree with you. It is not safe to leave WIFI without password. Your neighbor is able to access to your wifi, misused it for illegal sites or tasks that may lead you to trouble. In addition, they will slow down your internet speed, especially when they download the movies.

When I open WiFi, I always set a password. I also turn the WiFi off immediately when not in use. Hackers are everywhere and they can hack your password and use it to login whenever you turn the WiFi on.
