Do foods affect your mood?

Whenever I eat foods that are high in sugar, I feel very tired or moody. Do you think it's related to the sugar or is it just in my head?

One source has suggested a link between unhealthy, high fat/sugar diets and depression.

And, there no denying that what you eat can affect your mental, physical and emotional state as it's all connected.

For me, eating foods that contain high fructose corn syrup leads to a feeling of extreme fatigue. I'm sure it's related to my blood sugar.

So I have to avoid jams and preserves and syrups and anything that is overly sweet.

Lately, I've been eating a lot of whole wheat bread and really craving that kind of natural food and it's made a real difference in my health.

I'm rarely exhausted anymore and have so much more energy, especially for walking around the neighborhood.

Eating natural foods helps me stay cheerful and in a positive mood too. Do foods affect your mood?

Any food or drink can affect your body's hormones and cause them to be imbalanced. Since your hormones control your emotions, you could easily be affected with mood disorders if you eat the wrong things.

When I eat a lot of grains I feel zapped. I love to eat breads and pastas though but just get that drained feeling afterwards.

Angie, I suffer from the same thing sometimes. Please read this, hopefully it will help. These ideas really helped me out, especially the part about choosing whole wheat versus white breads and pastas. This one thing has made such a difference in my health and energy level.

Many people complain about feeling drained after eating pasta.

That's a normal reaction. Your body is just reacting to the gluten in the food, making you feel all chilled out and relaxed.

You should take those warning signs very seriously. My grandmother had the same problem before she was diagnosed with diabetes. It's nothing to be messed around with.

When you drink coffee doesn't it make you feel nervous and shaky? That's because the caffeine in the coffee is affecting your nervous system. This is just one example of a food or drink affecting your body or mood.

Caffeine and high fructose corn syrup are starting to affect my body a lot lately. I can rarely have caffeine anymore. Sad day as I really love tea. Do foods affect your mood?

If you eat a food that causes bad heartburn or pressure in your chest then you are likely to be in a bad mood. So food can affect your mood if it's the wrong kind.

It can happen, that is why the kids like the sugar, because it stimulate their brains and when they eat it they are like a Tasmania Demon lol. But some people feel weird after they eat something, some people feel happy when they drink coffee, but when I drink coffee I feel sleepy lol, so yes, the food can change your mood.

I would say my mood affects my food. Seriously, whenever I feel sad or in trouble I want to eat something super sweet. When I'm happy I want to go out for junk food, some soft drinks to share with my friends or family. If I'm super stressed I get extra hungry and want to eat all I can, no matter what. So usually I tend to eat according to my mood.

Food affects my mood as well. It is always when I take food that is heavy at night, it makes me want to sleep and that is not good for my work as a freelancer. So, what I always do is to eat light meals at night.

I don't think so, because I mostly eat when I'm hungry, never binge or do impulsive eating,so I have never had a mood swing after eating. But I thought a sugary food is supposed to make one hype from the chemical content of sugar, how come you feel dull afterward. It always good to eat light meals.

I don’t think sugar has something to do with the mood. If you are tired then food with sugar perks you up but not exactly your mood. For me, hunger is the big factor that affects my mood because I get temperamental when I am hungry and when I have eaten a good meal I am always in a good mood. Try eating good food that can be considered comfort food for you.
