Can you live without a car?

Between my gf and myself we have 4 cars. I couldn't live without one, as I live way out in the country near the beach and the nearest town is 30kms away. I also love driving my classic Porsche

So many people are dependent on car ownership, but that is limiting, especially if you only have one car for the household. I don't need to drive a car to get around. I can easily take a taxi if I want to go grocery shopping and our car is not available. And, the park is not too far, so we can walk, rather than take the car.

In some cultures car ownership is a rarity due to lack of money or poor economy. So using bikes or motorcycles is more common. Only Western countries put emphasis on car ownership as if it's so important.

Using a bike or motorized scooter will cost less money since you don't have to refuel. You will pay for electricity used to charge your vehicle, but that won't cost nearly as much as fuel.

A bike is better for the environment and non polluting. Another way to get around without owning a car is to simply walk or get a ride from a friend. So it's easily possible to live without a car, assuming you can get to work.

I could if I was in a larger city where I could walk or take public transportation. Where I am at now, I can't do either. I hate driving.

In almost every city, there is a bus line, assuming you live within a few miles of town. You should be able to catch a ride on the bus. Or, you could walk to work/school. If you live out in the country, you might not have this option.

Yes, you and I are quite reliant on all of our vehicles, that's for sure.
I need my car, as my workplace is 45 minutes away. You work from home, and do all the running.
I work 12hr shifts, both dayshifts, nightshifts, weekends and holidays. It's important that both of us have reliable cars. Errands have to get done while I'm at work, and I like having the option of driving the Porsche to work from time to time. As far as the fourth car, that's up for debate because it doesn't get used much. Within the next while we may decide to do something different. ;)

And, I think it differs for each person's situation.

I lived without a car for a year and was just as happy. Other than cabs, there are also online grocery and gourmet food stores; food delivery from local restaurants, etc.

Though it helps that I work at home.

If I had an out of the house job, I'm sure I would spend a small fortune on cab rides, assuming I did not have a car.

However, where I live in the country with wide open spaces and back roads one of my favourite things to do is drive around for hours listening to music cranked up. I don't drive because I have to go to work, as I work from home, but I do it because I truly ENJOY it. Crusin' to tunes is FUN!!!

However, where I live in the country with wide open spaces and back roads one of my favourite things to do is drive around for hours listening to music cranked up. I don't drive because I have to go to work, as I work from home, but I do it because I truly ENJOY it. Crusin' to tunes is FUN!!!

That sounds like a really fun thing to do. It reminds me of all the times I moved state, we would sit in the car traveling for hours along the highway with the music on. It was so much more fun that way, than just staring at the scenery.

My car is utilitarian, not just a mode of transportation but also a storage unit for my work out gear (trunk) and some of my office essentials, so it's my office on the go. I don't think I can live without it.

Whatever you are using for transportation should be fine, whether it's a bike, motorcycle, car, cab or bus, just so long as you are getting where you want to go.

I bike most places or walk or hike if I'm in the woods or country side. I don't depend on a car as it's not economically sound and not eco friendly.

And, it's a very smart choice for the environment, though not everyone can do this if they live aways from the city.

Just think of all the people who lived before cars were even invented. Some had access to a horse. Others just walked everywhere. Of course, that limited where those people could go. Just as today, if you only walk everywhere, you can only go so far before you have to return home.

It's not so hard dealing without a car, if you live in a small town where everything is just a few blocks from your house.

That's my situation now, though if I move it might be harder to get around without a car.

I'm working at home now and live close enough to the city that I could just take a cab. I could easily live without car ownership. I don't think that I have the energy to walk everywhere like some do.

The people you are talking about had horses and buggies. They did not walk everywhere. Otherwise it would have taken days to get anywhere.

It depends on your situation, really. If you live somewhere where you have access to reliable public transportation that can take you where you need to go, then yes. Or if you work or study nearby and can use other methods like walking or cycling to get there. However, if you have none of this it's best to have a car if your own. It would be too difficult to go anywhere if you don't.

We tried hard in saving money to buy a car. Metro Manila is worse than a concrete jungle with the heavy traffic and the wayward drivers. Taking a ride in a public transportation is an ordeal. You have to fall in line and the long queue takes an hour to get a ride. Having a car for 20 years now, I don't think I can survive in riding public utilities. The stress will kill me.

Having a car makes life easier, there's no doubt about it. It's very annoying to depend on someone else's car to go somewhere, and also you feel like you're making the other person uncomfortable. That's why I rather live in a place where public transportation work. Honestly, I've been in cities that are supposed to depend on tourism, and the public transportation is practically non existent. What about backpackers, we want to do some traveling too without being obligated to rent a car. Seriously, the dependency on a vehicle is way too much these days.

Sure I can live without one but it would make my life miserable. It's quite hard to commute here in my country, because over population you have to endure traffic and long lines to be able to ride our public transport. Taking a Cab or Grab is also expensive. Also, not having a car would severely limit my movement since there's a lot of places here that can't be accessed by public transport.
