All I do mainly is, copy and paste bits and pieces of the article into Google. It always shows up for me. I can even detect if my clients previous work was spun or not. When someone gets me to do research to write content on their site, I always check out of curiosity where their existing content came from. 8/10 chances it's scraped or spun, which is sad really.

Thanks for bringing this up NaturalWriter. And, I have found this to be true also. With one of my SEO clients, his entire website was a copy of another one. And, I had to rewrite every page and create new content. He was really shocked to find this out that he had a copy. But, apparently someone had cloned a site and sold it on eBay a few dozen times, all with copied content.

So it's always a good idea to check as you mentioned.

This is oh so terrible! I was asked to do a review on a cashier site, and as I was doing my research, I noticed many of the other sites (competitors and press releases) scraped all of his content. I let him know right away, but he seemed ok with it, but I was kind of mortified. I would probably be really upset if I found out my content had been copied/scraped...

If you want to check the content of a website then you can use :
www . copyscape.com/

And if you want to check some part of your content then you can use:
http : / /smallseotools.com/plagiarism-checker/

Both the tools are effective and I myself used these tools for checking copied content.

Paid Copyscape gives you more exact results.... Google takes only bit of content (A small description) - But a website has more and more texts.

Google will develop in the following months a tool to disavow unwanted links to your website. I think this will help some sites recovering and also make your competitors harder to hit your website. The disavow tool does take some time to work. The offending pages with the dodgy links need to be recrawled before they get disavowed.

Duplicate contents can checked easily in two ways
  1. Copy content & paste into google search, you will get the urls if contents are copied from.
  2. 2nd & best way is to use CopyScape.com, Paste the URL you want to check. this will enlist all website with matching contents.

But the problem in 2nd method is you have to make contents online before checking.

It looks like a difficult chore for me but I guess the comments above made it easier. When you say bits and pieces my understanding is a sentence and not just a phrase. Am I correct on this? Perhaps you can do a search 5 times with different sentences of the content and the search result will tell you if your content is a duplicate or not.
