Honestly linking root domains matter way more than raw backlink count when you're sizing up a competitor. A site with 50 backlinks from 50 different domains is in a much stronger position than one with 500 backlinks all coming from the same 5 domains - Google cares a lot more about how many unique sources are vouching for you than the raw number of links. When I'm looking at a competitor I check root domains first, then only look at total backlink count as a secondary signal, mostly to see if they're relying on a handful of sites linking to them repeatedly (which is usually a weaker profile than it looks on paper).Honestly linking root domains matter way more than raw backlink count when you're sizing up a competitor.
