Search engines determine the topic of the content based on the keywords used in the content title, content body and meta description and meta tags. If there are no keywords, the search engine will have a hard time in determining the topic of your content. Since search engines do not understand the contents that do not have keywords, the contents will never be found on searches. If content is not found, you are not getting any traffic.

You have a pretty good explanation of the keyword and I’d say I have learned something new today. I didn’t know the purpose of the keyword although I thought that the keyword acts like a backlink. But now you said that keywords are checked by search engines to know about the contents which mean the keyword that you will use should be directly relevant to the contents of the web page.

Keywords are the word or set of words that best describe your content. For example, you wrote an article about how to take care of pregnant cats. When someone asks you "what exactly is your content about?" what will be your answer? Yes, your article is about taking care of your pregnant cat. The primary topic of your article is "cat" Cat is your keyword. Search engines will show your content when some one searches for cat. However, there is a lot of competition for this keyword. You will have better exposure if you use "taking care of pregnant cat" for eywords. Since this is long, many people prefer to call it keyphrase or long tail search term.
