Do you use contests to stimulate traffic to your site?

I've been thinking about doing a contest to stimulate traffic to my forum. Maybe have a contest with most posts for an Amazon gift certificate prize. That would be easy to deliver via email.

I'm not concerned about spam posters winning as spam posts are easily deleted.

Any other ideas for site/forum contests to stimulate traffic or posting?

I'm unsure how to effectively use them. I tried one and no one signed up or did anything.. Seemed like a huge failure for me. Do you use contests to stimulate traffic to your site?

I guess it depends on the contest because forum members are joining the forum more for the niche and not because of the contest. But if the prizes are attractive then there will be more registrations. Try to post a contest of your forum in social media and specify that the prizes can be won by anyone provided they register. But inside the forum the blurb for the contest should include the line that says the required minimum number of posts to qualify for the prize.

I haven't made any site yet but going to, I will make some contests and polls to attract the audience. Quizzes would also be helpful to stimulate people.

It's a very good idea. I had giveaway contest on my first website from automotive niche few years back. Seller of canvas art with awesome car pictures contacted me and we ran his giveaway contest on my site. It was a win-win situation because he got my traffic and I got his because he advertised this contest on forums, social media sites and his website of course Do you use contests to stimulate traffic to your site?

I ran a 'post the most' contest on my forum and the first prize was a week of home page advertising but the banner runs on all pages on the site under the forum logo. I had so many posts that week. Conversely this past week, i didn't run the contest and posting was down. So the forum posting contest actually worked to get me new posts.

A contest can definitely stir awareness. But I am not for contests with prize money because it will stir superficial interest only. For me, a better contest prize is something directly related to the site. For a forum, a title like “poster of the month” is a nice honor for a simple contest. With a blog, maybe the winning reader or commenter will be featured by a short write up in the succeeding blog. Again, money is not a good contest prize.

I'm yet to use contests on my blog but I do give a bit of giveaway to the most active on my blog to motivate the person to do more.I will be considering this towards the end of the year, I think it will be splendid enough for my users.
