    He wants me to cut my price in half for freelance services

    A good friend of mine approached me recently to create a website for his site. I am experienced at making websites and have no problem doing the job. Though often I will use a premade template and just customize it if that's easier or cheaper to do. Now he is asking for a 'friends discount' and wants me to cut my regular price in half. It feels like he is putting me in an awkward situation for this. He knows that I need the money he's paying. So I can't really afford to discount. Also I feel obligated to do the work now that I have said that I would and to try to renegotiate half way through the job feels wrong.

    Did you get a written or verbal contract for this job? Did your friend agree via email or any written communication as to a price? If so, then your contract is already fixed and there is no reason he should expect a discount. Also, you are a professional at your job, so there is no reason to assume you should have to give discounts.

    That makes me sick! Your friend would never walk into his barber's shop and ask for a fifty percent discount. He is just playing on your sympathies and guilt to get a cheap or free service.
