How to Track Down The Owner of a Website Using Whois

Hey guys! I'm bringing you another tutorial on domains today. I'm sure some of us have had that moment where we go to a website and think something along the lines of: "I wonder who owns this website?" or "How do I contact the owner of this website?" etc. I know it's happened to me. Well, I have good news! You actually can do that. This tutorial will show you how to track down a website owner using Whois. There is a catch though; some websites have Whois Privacy which makes it impossible to find their information unless you do intense digging and sometimes even then you won't find it. Most websites however do have the owner's information. Let's use an SEO Company from Toronto as an example. It's called SEOlogist. I wouldn't recommend or disapprove of this website. It's a random one I found while Googling SEO. So let's start the tutorial.

Step One: First, go to a website that provides a free Whois service. I'm going to use Whois.net as that website. Go to whois.net.

Step Two: Now in the text input box, type in "seologist.com" and click GO to do execute the Whois.

Step Three: A bunch of different details should now come up on the page.

Step Four: Now sometimes the fax or phone number won't come up, but usually an address will. You have now done a Whois and can find all the information you need on the website owner.

Now you know how to Whois a website. If you ever have questions, someone pisses you off, or you need to find that information, you know how to. Next time you need to know, just use this tutorial and you will find exactly who you're looking for in almost all cases!

This information is good to know, as there are people out there who choose to share this information. In many cases the website owner can pay an extra fee to have their identity hidden, because they don't want their personal information given out worldwide. This is very understandable.

If you look up a website and the owner is unknown, don't assume the person is a "Bad Seller" or a "Fraudulent Service Provider". They just prefer having their personal information private (phone number, home address, etc).

There are some domain extensions that require this information and it's mandatory. I own a .ca and having the choice of privacy is not an option, so you would be able to look up the information on a .ca site and get the information you're looking for without issue.

I just felt it was important to point this out, as it's an imperative factor in seeking out a website owner, because you may not find them.
