The best way I have found, is to leave comments on blogs and to write articles as a guest blogger on sites that are in a similar niche as yours.
They can take some time though to show up, as most blog owners like to moderate comments, so make sure the comments are thoughtful and relevant or they probably will not get approved.

The blogs mostly have nofollow links, you can sign up different forums, and enter your homepage url on your profile there.
If you want a list of High PR dofollow forums, PM me How do you get oneway links from various website?

It’s nice to be a guest blogger of a famous blogger but it’s easier said than done unless you have a connection to that famous personality. However, you can still avail of his popularity by posting a comment on one of his blogs, more likely on his latest blog. The signature in your profile can be your footprint that other readers can click on. And that can happen if your comment is interesting and has value to the other readers.
