If a forum discussion is becoming heated with insults and name calling, that's a sure sign it should be locked. There are other instances where a discussion should be might be locked, including if the original issue is resolved. Please discuss other times you might lock a discussion.

From the experience I got with the forum of friends, they lock the thread only when it seems to be sufficient in replies. But for quarrels in a thread, what they do is to delete the thread with a reprimand to the concerned parties via private message. But if I were the admin, I won't probably lock a thread because I want my forum to be candid, no filter and just natural like a real society.
