How many subforums do you need?

I have four subforums on one main category on my forum and for now that is enough to capture all the new discussions and responses being posted by my small community. I have considered adding more subforums or categories but just worried if there is not enough people interested, those areas will not receive new discussions.

You should rather focus on having combined subforums while your forum is still fresh.

As many as you can fill successfully. You do not want a forum that has tons of subforums that are not being filled with posts. Start off smaller and then gradually add to it.

Not too many or else people will be overwhelmed with your forum and they will not want to visit it.

Just a handful as if you get too many the site gets to be too overwhelming.

Having too many subforums can be overwhelming for a site visitor. Keep your subforum count to less than five for a very new forum. Don't have sub-sub forums for every subforum either or that will defeat the purpose of keeping it simple.

Are you talking about subforums or subtopics? Sometimes you can have subtopic sections on the same forum and then break each one into several subforums. That will keep your forum more neatly organized.

Just encourage members to post as many new discussions as possible at the start and don't complicate it by having so many subforums that it gets all confusing.
