Do your forum members respond to new or old discussions?

Whenever I'm at a forum, I respond to older discussions as they have more responses and the conversation is more lively than with a new discussion that has fewer responses. I don't like newer discussions as much as there is not much to talk about. What is the situation like with new vs older discussions on your forum? And, would you rather a forum member post a new discussion or answer an older one?

Older discussions are better for search engine traffic, just keep them updated regularly. Though some members will prefer responding to new discussions as they can usually put in their opinion first before everyone else has a chance to respond.

I like both the new and the old conversations, depending on what they're about.
It's good to create new because it keeps things fresh, and people don't get tired of seeing the same old thread being bumped to the top all of the time. The debatable, and the most meaningful ones tend to be the longest, and of course, I take part in those ;)

Older discussions don't usually interest me, especially if 100 people have already responded. Most times, they will have already said something I would have said anyway, so it just seems like I'm copying what they're saying, rather than giving an original opinion. For that reason, I stick with discussions that have few responses, so I can contribute good content early.

Debates are always fun to take part in. However, I have trouble coming up with something new to say if the question has already been answered again and again by so many others.

Honestly, I don’t think the age of the discussion is relevant to its activity. As I had posted in another thread, I have seen some forums with very old discussions that are still getting new post. As long as the topic is relevant to the community, I guess it will continue to get replies regardless of the age. Most of the discussions that are very long are about websites and blogs that maybe the owners were instigating the reactions.
