Do private subforums lead to spam?

If you choose to have a private subforum, you might restrict it to members who have a minimum post count. This can be beneficial as it will inspire current forum members to post more and might increase new sign ups. However, the down side would be how you could also get a lot of people spamming useless (one word) posts just to pad their post count and gain entry to the private subforum. What do you think about post counts for private subforums? Or how do you handle the situation of a private subforum on your own site?

You could always base your subforum on a trusted member status. This trusted member would not just have a minimum number of posts but would have also been on your forum for a certain time and might even be voted into the private subforum by other trusted members. This would cut down the spam as entry to the subforum would not be based on post count.

You're in control of who's allowed into the private subforum, so don't leave it up to chance or post count. Decide who you want to allow in the private subforum. It's your forum, so make that decision for yourself.

Don't let the fear of spam deter you from creating private subforums that could add to the value of your forum and ensure member loyalty.

Have a strict set of rules on who can be invited or how membership is earned and then there will be no spam.

I have yet to see a forum with private subforums intended for the newbies. What I have encountered were some forums where the newbie has no posting rights on some boards. But all the boards are accessible for posting. And there is a required number of posts before the newbie can gain the authority to post on all the boards. One forum that I remember moderates the first few posts aside from the limited authority to post. Maybe that is to prevent spammers.
