Self promotion on a forum

What are your thoughts about self promotion on your forum? Do you tolerate any kind of link promotion? Do you let members occasionally mention (or blatantly refer to) their own sites and links? Not specifically talking about affiliate links, so much as links owned by the person making the post.

An occasional mention of one's own site is acceptable, so long as they take time to actually keyword hyperlink back to an article. That practice is a little annoying and usually gets the post deleted.

Members who are constantly hawking their article links are way more than annoying and distract from the main discussion. The purpose of the thread is not to refer traffic to one's own blog but to provide useful answers to questions posed.

If the person is constantly pointing to their own link, then it makes the forum look spammy. If you are a good mod, you will take time to clean this off your forum and if you see it on a guest forum, you will report it.

I encourage people to bring forward something useful and new. It can provide the other members to some different, and it allows room for getting to know each others interest and what they do.

If I have to hear 'look at my link, look at my link!' or 'click my signature line to find out more' from one more forum member, I might actually scream in real life. It's just beyond annoying. And, if I ever saw that on my forum, I would delete in a heartbeat.

If the site that a member is promoting is not directly related to the niche of your forum then I think it is just fine with the promotion. However, excessive promotion is annoying. Even in the social media, I am turned off when a friend would be posting several times a day of his business. For a member who has the habit of promoting his business in the forum, I guess an explanation on the issue is in order.
