I've been wanting to start a social network for obscure things lol How to turn WordPress into Social Network?

I would treat it more like a forum but it would be all fancy like facebook. I just never could find the right theme with specific plugins in order to do this.

Do you know where I can find the right themes and plugins? That would save me a lot of time ;)

I want to target obscure types of niches because they're obviously less competitive and if I can make it popular enough I can make some cash on the side How to turn WordPress into Social Network?

I could most likely get these types of social networks ranked high in the search engines since not many people will be doing search engine optimization for theirs if there is competition. I've been doing SEO for over 10 years so even if there was competition, it wouldn't really be tough to beat them.

How does buddypress and wordpress work together? I've never used buddypress so it's a totally new world for me if I install it. Is it more of like a platform or is it a plugin that will work with wordpress to make a social platform? I guess I need to do a little more research on buddypress to figure out exactly how it can work with wordpress and if it's the right thing for me.

I did talk with a designer and programmer about coding up a social platform for me and they quoted me over $15,000 which I definitely turned down since it would be for a website that will probably have 100 members a year How to turn WordPress into Social Network?

Wordpress is definitely the way to go for this, I just need to do some more research I guess.

Thanks,

Razzy

BuddyPress is plugin with bunch of addons for WordPress which making it look like social network site. There is more plugins to add afterwards, just depend which way you want to expand it and what functionalities you want. Yes, it also depend on theme and here is one that looking very good, Socialize is paid (premium) theme but it's well designed, optimized and full functional to present your social network site. Just browse this website and you will see all nice features offered by WordPress, BuddyPress and this theme. There is also other different themes, but this one is really eye catchy How to turn WordPress into Social Network?

I think extending WordPress with BuddyPress may not be a good option. Also you can find that some of the time that can be overkill. And instead dedicated social network scripts would be more fair in such case. I'd not even invest my time setting it up with WordPress because it's not why wordpress was designed. But for those on low budget this can be a good option.

I am not sure whether I will launch my own social network or not, however, I always have this desire to launch my own social network. I am not a programmer, therefore, I cannot do coding and develop my own script. I will have to work with existing scripts. There are many scripts, however, wordpress is the easiest ways to use. I know I can create wordpress powered social network through buddy press plugins, however, I am yet to try this.
