Payment Processors: PayPal vs. Stripe vs. 2Checkout

Many people sell something online but they tend to gravitate towards PayPal as their payment processor since it's the biggest name in the field.  PayPal is definitely a great processor, but there are some out there that might fit your needs a bit better, and two of those could be either Stripe or 2Checkout.

Depending on the services or products you offer, the areas you sell in, and the payment methods you want to collect will determine which of these 3 big processors is just right for you.  Not all of them do the same thing, so please stick around and keep reading, this discussion might open up your eyes and you might jump over to a different processor Payment Processors: PayPal vs. Stripe vs. 2Checkout

Using PayPal as your payment processor
The majority of people out there will go with PayPal by default, but that's only because it's the most well-known company to help you collect payments.  This is definitely a great choice for anything you want to sell online, except if you want to target specific countries.

PayPal isn't available to a lot of countries around the world, which will limit your sales if you sell internationally, but it's not usually a deal breaker for most companies out there.

Using Stripe as your payment processor
When people get banned from PayPal, or they're looking for a new platform entirely just because they want a change, they will usually check out Stripe as one of their options.  Stripe has been around for a while now and is rising in popularity because they pride themselves on their security.  There are advanced fraud filters that you can adjust to block or accept payments from people who have less than credible purchasing histories.

Stripe is definitely powerful, but it still has 2 downsides to the overall system.  The first downside of Stripe is that you can't use it for certain niches like Direct Marketing, which is what I was going to use it for, because it goes against some terms they have in place.  The other downside is that they only allow a few dozen countries to access them, which means you can't accept a payment unless your buyers are from those specific areas, and that means fewer sales for you if you sell internationally.

Using 2Checkout as your payment processor
I've recently set up a 2checkout (2co) account and it seems to work pretty well.  What I like about it is I can accept payments from pretty much anyone in the world, they buyers can still use PayPal through the platform if they want, and they don't discriminate against direct marketing.

The downsides that I've heard are they don't have the best 1 on 1 support and they hold your payments for 7 days before releasing them to your bank account.  Those aren't deal breakers for me, and that's why I went with 2co instead of Stripe in order to collect payments on my new website Payment Processors: PayPal vs. Stripe vs. 2Checkout

In conclusion
If you collect payments online you should educate yourself about the top 3 companies I've talked about.  If you're using PayPal you will be limiting yourself if you sell internationally.  If you use Stripe you will have advanced fraud filters but still, be limiting yourself.  If you use 2checkout you will be able to sell to everyone, but you won't have the best customer support and you will see your money on hold for 7 days before you have access to it.  No matter which you choose, they all have upsides and downsides, so just pick the lesser of the evils and be happy with your sales Payment Processors: PayPal vs. Stripe vs. 2Checkout

All of these payment processor have their good side and bad side. It's more of using the one that serves your need better. PayPal is a good option although there are lots of issues coming up with PayPal recently especially with the account limitations problem. This is a very serious problem with PayPal. I have a friend whose account was limited for 6 months, it was horrible.

It’s true - a lot of the time deciding on the right payment method for your business tends to be a matter of weighing up several pros and cons and choosing what works best for you.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Exactly! What's most important to your business is finding the best payment processor that would best suit your business needs well and also serve your clients well. It would be bad for you and your business if the choosen payment processor have lots of issues that affects its effectiveness.

Really? i didn't know about this, fortunately i have not yet encountered any problem with Paypal through the years. Although i have other means of transactions, i still use Paypal as my primary provider.

Hey, same here! I really enjoy using their service. I'm glad most of us find it useful. They're really famous even with other new programs.

I just like using Paypal for its simplicity. I still find it nice for making quick and easy transactions. I'll probably stick to it since I'm satisfied with their service.

I have to agree that everything has good sides and bad sides. Just be careful and weighing the pros and cons and then decide what to use, You can't find flawless payment processor.

I'm not aware of any limitations on Paypal accounts, but to be sure I always withdraw to my bank account when I've accumulated a nice amount of money on my Paypal.

Thanks for this article. Its just now that I have known about other payment processor. I only use my paypal account. Its good to know that there are others too.

What is the issue about that 6-month period on the Paypal account of your friend? What exactly do you mean by limitation that the account will only last for 6 months? This is a serious case that we should be talking about because Paypal is the most widely-used remittance center in the internet. If there are cases like that limitation issues on accounts then it might be a problem to us in the near future.

Thanks for these tips. I agree with you that paypal is the best known payment payment processor. Its almost like they have a monopoly. They use this monopoly very badly and can ban you at will. I would not advise you to use paypal if you are selling your own products online. If someone asks for their money back which they often do if they are not satisfied with the product, paypal will eventually penalize you and close your account. I will be sure to research Checkout and see if I can use it.

PayPal’s fees are also quite high in my opinion, but for so many people they’re a trusted payment method so my business still accepts it. I do hate that they charge so much per transaction though.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah that's the only downside of Paypal, but i think most payment providers have charges with little difference with Paypal. It's just that Paypal service is more efficient and safe in my opinion that's why i still use it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I think you're right. It could be because they're the one monopolizing transactions. I doubt they'll change this anytime soon. Sometimes you put with stuff like this.

I am using paypal now. And I can say that paypal is very sensitive. But as we all know it is well known so most people use it. Luckily it is available in our country. And I can use my paypal funds in paying my purchasea online. Or I can just tranfer my paypal funds to my country's local app.which I can use for paying may electric bill, or to buy prepaid load, and many more.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
It could be due to their standards. I think they're very picky when it comes to security. You can't just withdraw a lot of money. You need to get verified first. Hahaha!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

lei08pineda
Yeah, I just verified my paypal account. I am not against their strategy of being too sensitive. It is for the users' protection too.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree. I'm glad that they're taking great measures to ensure our security. It's not nice to find out that your money is missing.

It is a great marketing strategy too to have a strict policy. People will most likely to put their money on more secured one.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's right. It's also part of the reason why I'm still using it. Who doesn't want strict measures against online theft? It's reassuring to know that they're constantly monitoring attempts against hacking.

Oh, that's sad. Good thing I only use it for personal finances. I prefer other forms of transactions for business related stuff.

I agree with the fact acts like some monopoly. In my country they recently froze millions of accounts for those people who had limited subscrptions. I mean who does that even without prior notice. Just waking up to have zero funds to spend while you have a lot of money in your account. A lot of guys here are already looking for greener pastures.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

fishbate
That's unfortunate and i think unfair. I just hope that any problems with Paypal on your country will be taken cared of soon. I think if Paypal have any problems on your country they should first notify the users for them to have time to withdraw their money.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's very unfortunate. I hope people get their money back. I find it disheartening whenever stuff like this happens. I guess this explains why others have bad experiences with Paypal.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Oh, wow, I wonder what's happened? and if they get their money back? This is the reason why I always transfer my money immediately to my local bank account once I got earned something and got pay via paypal.

You just have to bear with the situation. Unless they can organize themselves and sue the company as a collection of people they are definitely out of options. Alone you will never successfully tackle such a company.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It's gonna be a long process, and waste of time and money. That's right, much better to ignore that instead of filing a case against a big company.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I do not yet know what they decided to do but the ones that I know decided to wait. They are just hoping that by some way their accounts will be unfrozen. Some had all their funds there pending withdrawal or they wanted to accumulate enough before withdrawing.

I never knew that PayPal wasn’t a completely global reaching payment method! Always interesting to learn something new, and that for some places I may have to branch out more.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It restricted in few countries as a result of fraud cases which must have taken place in the countries that we are talking about. I think they should do more to ensure that fraud cases are limited so as not to make more people have mistrust about them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Ah, that makes sense, I understand why in those cases they may have to temporarily restrict access in a country. I hear you though about PayPal needing to do more in terms of identifying fraud and finding ways to combat it. Fraud cases can really decrease trust in a business.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
That's the issue and I feel bad when I hear that there is this kind of restrictions in some countries. Getting to the point where you would want to do some legit businesses online only to discover that the mode of payment is not acceptable in your country is simply frustrating to say the least.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I have been making use of PayPal for quite some time now and the truth is that it is being used in lots of countries unlike what we have with the other platforms. It is not always easy to make payment transaction using the other platforms as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Of course yes, PayPal is the best or should I say the number one payment processor when it comes to making use of online financial company for your business payment needs. PayPal payment processor covers a good number of countries but it still lacks dearly especially in the developing part of the world.

This is also the reason why I'm using paypal. I can withdraw my money or transfer to my local bank account in an instant and will not wait for two to three days. the two days looks like a year for me, I need to my money in sec. after the transaction. LOL.

To tell you honestly, I've heard of both stripe and 2checkout but internationally I don't think they are that reliable because I don't know anyone or any company that uses them as an option. I think PayPal, Neteller, Skrill are the best known international processors.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Absolutely correct on PayPal, Neteller, Skrill to being the best known international processors that the world uses today. I have a business partner who is into e-currency exchange, he deals mostly on PayPal, Neteller, Skrill, Fiverr funds. Personally, I haven't used Stripe and 2checkout but from what I have read on several articles about it online, I think it's a good alternative.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NesMarcos
I tried using Skrill and in my surprise, it has a higher fee for bank fund transfer than PayPal. I haven't tried stripe and 2checkout because I am not sure if these payment processors are available in my country. So having no other options, I just continue using PayPal and until now I haven't gotten any issues with them aside from high fees.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
PayPal used to be cheaper in terms of charges last year, it was at the turn of 2018 that they increased their fees compared to what they use to charge but even if you compare what PayPal charges to what other payment processor charges, it will be very clear to you that PayPal is the best way out for most online business.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NesMarcos
I also noticed that PayPal increased their charges this year and basically they increased big time in my currency. Nevertheless, despite of higher charges, it is indeed PayPal is the best payment processor for online businesses.

I find paypal very convenient. Stripe is not available in my location and I have never used 2checkout. The only problem I find with paypal is paypal does not listen to seller, it gives more preferance to the buyers and some buyers are scammers, they get the product yet file a refund. IN most cases paypal will refund the buyer.

I have seen huge people use 2checkout system for their e commerce website. Some of them got huge and huge benefit about that or by using that. Paypal is one of the largest and world greatest and world beautiful payment processor. Enough country gives the huge facility with anew paypal account like a paypal mastercard or by add bank service. I didn't used stripe yet now. But in this world about ecommerce website or freelancer and outsourcing related website- there have no alternative of paypal. Paypal is the main way in this world to buy any thing from online.

Thanks

I think stripe and the 2checkout are yet to be solutions for the freelancers. And on that note I found the paypal as one good option. I think payoneer and transferwise seems to be doing lot better in that case. I have not much aware of the other payment processors. It just makes things a bit harder to understand too.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
You have a very good point about PayPal being mostly used by freelancer and most sites for freelancer makes use of PayPal payment processor more than any other payment processor. Stripe and the 2checkout aren't even popular like payoneer and transferwise. Payoneer is used well in Philippines and it's very good for them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
Payoneer and transferwise seems to have got a lot of important weight now. And many freelancers are moving to the site. You can see that in future more such type of the payment processor. And the paypal seems to be being too much monopoly into the thing. I'd say that this type of the payment processing competition is necessary.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The topic is about what payment method to use if you are selling online. If you are selling on ebay, paypal is the obvious choice. In fact paypal is the primary choice for many merchants. However, paypal is not available everywhere and not everyone is using paypal; therefore, you also have to use an alternative method. Bitcoin payment can be the best alternative payment method, bitcoin can use used from any corner of the world.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
Yes I understand that it is in context of the selling. However for the selling, I have found stripe, fastspring, and many other credit card processing sites are much better. And they are working behind many other woocommerce type websites and make the transaction system make use of different system and not paypal. I think bitcoin and other crypto seems to be not long term but some companies are using it on cart.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
I do not have any experience with using cards as payment processor. I have never used cards to pay online or used cards to receive the funds made through selling. I am not very confident in using cards to make purchases because I do not want to give away my card information. I use paypal for making a purchase, if paypal is not available I never make any purchase from that company or seller. I do not know much about card processing companies, however, the one that I know does not work in my home country.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
I think most of the ecommerce business require you to have credit card processing backend. Because nobody relies on paypal. As paypal has high blockage issues. So it's reasonable for making use of the credit and debit card processor. That's where the stripe and 2checkout are functioning pretty well. That's what I have found out.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
You have a point. However, my problem is I cannot use stripe as it is not available in my home country. I will have to do some research on how to use card payments on my ecommerce site. I think giving alternative such as bitcoins, skrill, neteller etc will also be very helpful.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes stripe is only available in 13 top countries so far. Other countries will follow suit slowly. If they get in india soon, I am sure they will get in nepal eventually. So that is one more way they can solve the issues. I'd say that some of the payment processors have different issues while coming to new countries.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
Paypal is available in India. However, Reserve Bank of India, the central bank of the country does not allow money to sit on paypal account, once the money is on paypal account of a user, it will be transfered to the bank account associated with paypal. Sadly, paypal is not working in Nepal. The central bank is not allowing paypal to operate in the country. I am using this example to explain everything that is in India may not be available in Nepal. Nepal is a small market, large companies do not take interest in Nepal. However, a lot of people from Nepal are trying to make money online and they face problems because of the government policy.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
Yes that applies to all the countries where paypal does not have bank. Because paypal is known for money laundering. So many countries not allow paypal banks. So that is what I have seen so far in my observation. So I think it may surely take stripe. Because stripe requires multiple countries to come to asia. Currently stripe is not available in our side of asia. So if india and china gets available other countries that be available.

Since I've become a freelancer, I have tried several payment processors and in my opinion, PayPal works best for me. I have been using it for quite some time and I never had any issues with them maybe because their customer support team is always ready to attend to concerns. Nevertheless, the fee on fund transfer is absolutely high.

I didn't know that PayPal is not available in a lot of countries. I thought it's one of the most accepted payment processors in the world, since it has a wide user base.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, paypal is one of the most used payment processors. howeverm it does not work in a lot of African and Asian countries. Even in my home country paypal has limitation. You can create paypal account, however, you cannot receive funds. Therefore, we always have to think about alternative method if we are selling online.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I'm just wondering, why it isn't available in a lot of African and Asian countries though it's one of the most accepted payment processors in the world, since it has a wide user base?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I can't speak for other countries, however, paypal is not available in my home country because of the central bank policy. The central bank monitors the foreign transactions and puts a lot of restrictions. Therefore, the central bank does not allow paypal. INterestingly, the payment processors like skrill and payza are available in our country.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, every payment processor has their limitations. I guess for some areas, they're not covered by it. That's why many are looking for alternate forms of payment other than Paypal.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, using payment processor has limitation. First of all, you have to verify your account in order to fund it. You need to associate your bank and card to verify. Secondly, when you fund your account., you will be charged funding fees, sometimes funding fees are very high. However, I still think that is is safe to use payment gateway like paypal instead of card because you do not have to share your financial information.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It is difficult to find merchants accepting paypal on these sites. card payment, western union or alipay, paypal alternative of alibaba, are the commonly used payment options. I think you should use commonly used payment methods and should use multiple payment options.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's certainly right. In our country, 'cash on delivery' is common. Many online businesses allow this mode of payment because they want to build trust among their customers.

Me too! Who doesn't like "Cash On Delivery." It's the safest and most convenient way of paying for online purchases. You get to inspect the product before accepting it. I often use this form of payment.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NesMarcos
Likewise! Payment Processors: PayPal vs. Stripe vs. 2Checkout Nowadays there are some online business platforms that sell products not as described on their website. There was a scenario uploaded on a social media site that the customer ordered for a mobile phone. When the delivery came and the box was handed to him, it was so light so he was so doubtful about it. He inspected the box first before paying for it and he was so surprised because it was not a phone but a box of a cough syrup! I totally agree that 'Cash on Delivery' is the best and safest way to purchase online.

PayPal is one of the best payment processors however the transfer fee is high. Moreover, according to one of the members, he mentioned that PayPal is not available in their country because of the Central Bank Policy, which monitors all the transactions and give restrictions for foreign transactions.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Ah, alright, I thought they did something wrong. That's right, some of the Asian countries are not allowed to use Paypal. I noticed that, the paypal transaction fees is a little high, but their service is better to other I think, and I always got my payment on time and instant on my local account.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NesMarcos
Indeed, PayPal gives a well-satisfactory service to their clients and basically one of the highest trusted payment processors in the world. However, it is a bit disappointing because not all countries allow PayPal as their payment processor.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
Maybe the paypal is not responsible for that, but the central bank on their own country. The policies of their bank and the paypal agreement might be their problem and this is the reason why there's some bad feedback's against paypal.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
I think that PayPal is the best when it comes to South East Asian countries because it's the only international payment processor being accepted by most online vendors and physical establishments. Although there are still limitations on its services like transfers to visa cards are still being charge $15, on top of that there's an imposed $15 minimum for transfers in the Philippines. PayPal should lessen the charges on banks although they keep on saying that there are no charges their partner banks and local processors here maybe the ones charging us heavily.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

To be honest about the topic of payment processors, I had wanted to have another account aside from Paypal. My worry is what if Paypal shuts down? I think it was Payza which experienced an issue of closing down. Users were at a disadvantage because their money was locked for a time. I had been with Paypal since the first time I earned money from online work so maybe I will stick it out since Paypal can give me what I need.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I mean, if Paypal shuts down you can be signed up and live with another processor is about 10 minutes, so I wouldn't lose to much sleep about that. Paypal has market share right now, potential customers are already signed up and comfortable with it. That makes it the best regardless of the technical specifics, they are the Google of Payment processing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I wouldn't worry about it as well. It seems that Paypal is here to stay. Just as much as other prevalent stuff on the net. So always stay updated with Paypal if you really want to be sure.

Yeah, haven't tried withdrawing my funds for a while but I heard Paypal increased their charge when withdrawing funds, up from $3? I haven't checked and I'm also not familiar with how other sites handle it.

I actually don't know. But last time I withdrew my funds, it was still $3. I hope it stayed that way. We don't need processing fees to increase any time soon.

I've heard about Stripe but I only have account with Paypal. It's the most widely used. There maybe issues well I guess it's normal there's no perfect system. But it's good that you've given the pros and cons of these 3 payment processors. There's a chance that I might make use of the other payment methods if Paypal is not available.

I'm also amazed by Paypal's reach. It's the most used online money processor since the past years. I think it'll remain that way for a long time. They don't seem to be going anywhere much like Google. They're here to stay.

I will check out Stripe and 2Checkout.

I have worked with PayPal for sometime now. It is unfortunate it is not functional in some countries. In my country payoal has partnered with my phone provider that you get your cash in less than 2 hours.

The biggest downer is if you forget your password and security questions. I lost $86 that way.

It's my first time to read about Stripe and 2Checkout. I've been using paypal and it's my best choice cause most of my payment method support paypal. What I don't like about is the fee, It's a little bet high, Imagine that deduction specially if you spend most of the time to earn that amount.

I always using Paypal on my daily online transaction because its easy to us and their name is trusted among the user. Its my first time to heard about stripe or 2Checkout this is really helpful when it comes the Paypal got a problem of using it because now I can use Stripe or 2Checkout as an alternative for my online transaction. Ever heard of Skrill? I think Skrill is also a good way to make transaction online.

This is my first time I have heard of 2co. I knew stripes and paypal but I am not familiar with 2co. Based on this article, I can clearly see why paypal is still the number. It doesn't matter how promising one service provider can be, customer will always consider which service provider is easier to avail and with larger availabilty.

I guess Stripe and 2checkout are great payment processors with lots of advantages, but it will only be beneficial as long as it is available in your country. The main reason why PayPal is the preferred option is that of its local availability. Considering the fact that several people who work or do business online come from different locations worldwide.

I think paypal is more reliable and I guess the reason why paypal getting users banned is just to protect their platform so that it would maintain its integrity and more people will use it as a channel to get pay money. I have been using my account on paypal for many months already and I am making sure that I don't do any violations. But I think it is just easy for me because the only reason for my paypal account is to have my pay money.

Thank you for this article. I will keep this in mind about the other 2 details you provided though Im using Paypal now. I guess the main thing here is follow the regulations they want us to follow to make sure our account will remain active and safe. They just want to protect our security and privacy so lets just do what their terms of conditions too.

I will choose PayPal, tho it has a big amount of fee, but you can assure that your money is safe from them. And also lots of online jobs are offering their payments thru PayPal, so I will choose it.

PayPal is the go to payment options specially online. I don't think we should consider any other options unless it's local and much more convenient to you. In my country, we have 3 services that are like Paypal and one of them even connects with Paypal, offering free transfers from Paypal. I find that using Paypal and this local service meets my needs in receiving and sending money.

I will prefer PayPal because the process of payment is way faster on PayPal than any other, and also Paypal is more famous than the two said competitors, and I think my profile is secured on PayPal than any other.

I am already using PayPal and I am quite satisfied with their service. I'm not really familiar with Stripe and 2Checkout but based on what I have just read, they too are functional and trustworthy payment processors. The problem with PayPal is it's limitation since it's not available to a lot of countries. If I want to expand my business, I think I'm going to switch to either Stripe or 2Checkout.
